In 1914 and was formed from the merger of three groups whose roots can be traced back to 1899. In that time, veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure the rights and benefits of returning servicemen. In 1915, the V.F.W. was comprised of 5,000 members nationally. The Department level of organization was first established in 1920. Today, the V.F.W. and its Auxiliaries encompass some 2.3 million members in about 8,400 posts worldwide. Its continuing mission statement is to "Honor the dead by helping the living" and is focused on Veterans and Community Service, the maintenance of National Security and the preservation of a strong National Defense.
V.F.W. St. Mihiel post #247 Is the 2nd oldest, continuously active Post in the State of Nebraska. Among the Programs Post #247 annually support in keeping with the overall mission statement include Troop Support through contributions to Adopt-A-Unit, Safety Programs like an annual Bicycle Rodeo, Youth Activities including the Voice of Democracy Program and the Annual Buddy Poppy Drive providing support to Veterans and their families who are in need of emergency assistance.
